Hindalco Industries Ltd., part of the Aditya Birla Group, has announced a major INR 21,000 crore expansion of its aluminium smelter operations in Odisha, reinforcing India’s ambitions in advanced materials and electric mobility. The investment will add 3.6 lakh tonnes per annum (TPA) of capacity at the Aditya Aluminium complex in Sambalpur.
Alongside the smelter expansion, Hindalco has commissioned a 1.7 lakh TPA flat rolled products (FRP) and battery-grade aluminium foil facility, developed with an investment of INR 4,500 crore. The new unit is India’s first dedicated battery foil manufacturing facility and is designed to support up to 100 GWh of lithium-ion cell production, a critical input for electric vehicles and energy storage systems.
The projects were inaugurated by Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and form part of Hindalco’s broader INR 37,000 crore investment programme in the state. With these developments, the company aims to strengthen domestic production of high-value aluminium products, reduce import dependence, and position India as a key player in the global EV and energy storage supply chain.
