Hyster has unveiled an updated electric counterbalanced forklift designed to meet the demands of intensive industrial operations while delivering zero exhaust emissions. The new Hyster® J45-70A electric forklift covers a 4,500 to 7,000-pound capacity range and is positioned as a robust alternative to internal combustion models for both indoor and outdoor use.
According to the company, the J45-70A has been engineered to provide the durability and performance traditionally associated with Hyster’s internal combustion trucks, while offering greater flexibility in power and sustainability choices. “This electric variant furthers our mission to give operations mission-critical equipment with the performance they expect from Hyster, built for their unique requirements,” said Andrew Omahen, Director of Industry Solutions and Strategy at Hyster. He added that the truck is designed to withstand demanding environments through enhanced component protection, power options and improved visibility to support all-day productivity.
The pneumatic tire electric A series models are equipped with updated dual-drive electric motors, delivering reliability comparable to combustion engines. For applications requiring higher performance and improved energy efficiency, an enhanced motor package is available. As standard, the trucks feature IP67-rated fully sealed drive motors and axles, providing protection against dust, debris and fluids without the need for additional washdown or environmental protection packages. Hyster says this design approach simplifies configuration while reducing maintenance requirements and downtime.
Battery flexibility is a key feature of the J45-70A. Operations can choose between lead-acid, thin plate pure lead (TPPL) or lithium-ion battery options, allowing businesses to align equipment selection with productivity targets, sustainability strategies and existing charging infrastructure. This approach is intended to minimize the need for costly changes to electric infrastructure or charging workflows.
Operator comfort and usability have also been central to the redesign. The forklift features a spacious operator compartment with multiple seat options, ample floor space and a touchscreen display. Visibility has been enhanced through an industry-leading through-the-mast view and various overhead guard configurations. For operations requiring additional comfort and climate control, a full steel cabin with air-conditioning or heating is available. Hydraulic control options include standard mechanical levers, mini-levers or new dual joystick controls.
Safety and fleet management technologies come standard on the J45-70A. The Hyster Dynamic Stability System (DSS) uses five integrated sensors to monitor travel speed, lift height, tilt angle, load weight and steer angle, helping to reduce the risk of tip overs and product damage. The truck can also be paired with Hyster Reaction operator assist technologies, such as pedestrian awareness cameras, to support safer operating practices. In addition, the base tier of Hyster Tracker telemetry is included as standard, enabling fleet managers to monitor equipment usage, maintenance schedules, impacts and real-time truck locations.
With the launch of the J45-70A, Hyster aims to strengthen its electric forklift portfolio by offering a heavy-duty, configurable solution that combines zero-emission operation with industrial-grade performance and advanced safety technologies.
