LS Cable & System has secured a major turnkey contract worth KRW 60 billion (approximately USD 41 million) from Malaysia’s national utility, Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), to develop a 132 kV submarine power transmission link connecting the Malaysian mainland to Langkawi Island. The project is expected to significantly strengthen the island’s electricity infrastructure and ensure a more stable and reliable power supply for one of Malaysia’s most important tourism hubs.
Under the agreement, LS Cable & System will take full responsibility for the project lifecycle, covering system design, material procurement, submarine cable manufacturing, as well as cable laying and installation. The comprehensive scope highlights the company’s proven capabilities in delivering end-to-end submarine power solutions, from engineering and production to offshore construction.
The Langkawi interconnection project is particularly strategic as island grids often face challenges related to supply stability and capacity constraints. By establishing a high-voltage submarine link, the project will enhance grid resilience, support growing electricity demand, and improve energy security for the island’s residential, commercial, and tourism sectors.
The contract win also reflects broader momentum in the regional submarine cable market. With the ASEAN Power Grid initiative accelerating cross-border and regional interconnections, demand for large-scale submarine power infrastructure is rising rapidly. Industry forecasts indicate that the global submarine cable market could reach KRW 34 trillion (around USD 23 billion) by 2030, with the Asia-Pacific region accounting for nearly KRW 20 trillion (approximately USD 13 billion) of that total.
For LS Cable & System, the Malaysia project further strengthens its global market position and reinforces its expansion strategy in the high-growth Asia-Pacific region. Working closely with its affiliate LS Marine Solution, the company is preparing to demonstrate integrated turnkey synergies in upcoming projects, including South Korea’s West Coast Energy Highway. Through these initiatives, LS Cable & System continues to position itself as a key global player in delivering critical power transmission infrastructure worldwide.
