German utility Uniper SE has signed a ten-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Danish industrial cable manufacturer NKT A/S for the full output of a new 17.2-MWp solar photovoltaic project in Wilhelmshaven, Germany.
Under the physical PPA, NKT will purchase all electricity generated by the Voslapper Groden solar farm, along with the associated guarantees of origin. The project is being developed on the ash landfill site of a former coal-fired power plant in Wilhelmshaven, transforming a legacy fossil-fuel location into a renewable energy asset.
Once operational, the solar installation is expected to produce approximately 17.9 GWh of electricity annually. The power will be used to supply NKT’s production facilities in Nordenham and Cologne, supporting the company’s efforts to lower emissions across its manufacturing operations and strengthen the sustainability profile of its cable production.
The targeted commercial operation date for the Voslapper Groden project is January 31, 2027. However, commissioning could take place earlier if construction and finalisation proceed ahead of schedule.
The agreement reflects the growing role of long-term renewable PPAs in Germany’s industrial sector, as energy-intensive manufacturers increasingly secure direct access to green electricity to manage costs, enhance supply security, and advance decarbonisation goals.
